Nobody can deny the charm and elegance of hardwood flooring. Wood is the most preferred material for creating spectacular floors. However, the warmth and natural beauty of the wood are not limited to flooring. Lately, style-minded homeowners have started experimenting with hardwood to create accent walls. For centuries, hardwood is considered to be the most popular and classy flooring material. It is no wonder that now this material has also become popular for interior wall designing. Hardwood is a perfect material to cover an accent wall or even an entire room because it’s so subtle to easily blend with any background.
The enduring beauty and durability of hardwood make it the best choice for transforming your home from top to bottom. Whether your room is big or small, you can choose from a variety of wood colors to get a rustic or contemporary look. Wood allows you to be as creative as you want. You can go with lighter shades in rooms that don’t get a lot of natural sunlight or choose dark oak to add impact in a traditional-styled home. When high-quality hardwood is properly installed, it gives a distinctive character to any space. However, whether installing hardwood on floors or walls, you need special skills to ensure that your walls look smooth years after you have put them up. So, let’s take a look at the things to consider when installing hardwood on walls.
Preparation
Whether you prefer wainscoting, diagonals, borders, or other patterns, hardwood is a versatile material that can give your walls a luxurious look. However, it’s advised to hire a professional installer to ensure a smooth installation. If not installed properly, you may fail to achieve the desired look and even void the material warranty. For perfect hardwood installation on walls, preparation is of utmost importance. If you have got the product from a reliable hardwood company then you can rest assured that the material is properly inspected during the manufacturing process. However, you should again inspect the product before installation. If everything looks fine and you have got all the tools needed then start preparation. It is crucial to properly prepare the wall before installation. To avoid problems during the installation process, make sure the wall is clean, dry, level, and structurally sound. It is best to consider local building codes before starting this project.
Installation
You can find hardwood of varying thicknesses, widths, and lengths. However, irrespective of the type of wood you choose, most products have the same installation procedure. The process involves using adhesive and screws to apply a plywood base on the desired surface. After placing the plywood in the desired location, drill 1½” drywall screws at every 8″ to 10″ into the wall studs. It is important to accurately measure the wall to find out a center point, as well as to measure the width of the planks to be used. Now, starting from the center, divide the number of inches to the outside edge by the width of the planks. Suppose, if the center of the wall from the corner is 80″ and the plank width is 3″ then cut planks of size 80″ ÷ 3″. If the wall’s corner is not straight, make sure to cut the plank that fits the corner properly. Also, cut the right sizes to ensure that the starting and ending planks are of the same width.
